Lancia Stratos: Built for One Job, and Utterly Dominant at It

Very few road cars have ever been designed with such a narrow, singular purpose. This one existed almost entirely to win rallies, and it did so relentlessly.

A Road Car That Was Really a Rally Weapon

Most manufacturers adapt an existing road car for competition. This one worked almost entirely in reverse — a competition-focused design that happened to need a small number of road-going versions built purely to satisfy homologation rules.

A Ferrari-Sourced V6 Built Purely to Satisfy Homologation Rules

Introduced in 1973, it was purpose-built for rallying from the outset, using a mid-mounted Ferrari-sourced V6 engine in a compact, extremely short-wheelbase chassis designed specifically for agility on tight rally stages. Only a small number of road-going examples were built, purely to satisfy the homologation rules requiring a minimum production run for competition eligibility.

A Gandini-Designed Shape Built for Tight Rally Stages

Styled by Marcello Gandini, its short wheelbase and wedge-shaped nose gave it exceptional agility through tight corners, a genuinely purpose-built rally shape rather than a repurposed road car design. Its distinctive, wide, low stance and dramatically curved windscreen made it one of the most visually striking rally cars ever to compete at the sport's highest level.

Dominating the World Rally Championship

It dominated the World Rally Championship throughout the mid-1970s, winning multiple manufacturer titles and establishing itself as one of the most successful rally cars of its era. Its extreme specialisation and pure competition focus have made it a genuinely legendary name among rally enthusiasts specifically, even among audiences less familiar with road-going classics generally.

How Much Does a Lancia Stratos Cost Today?

Genuine original road-going examples are exceptionally rare given the tiny homologation production run, and command some of the highest prices among 1970s classics at auction, reflecting both their scarcity and their direct connection to one of rallying's most dominant eras.
