Starter Motor: Guides by Make & Model

Often confused with a battery problem — find your specific model below to tell them apart.

Two Different Faults, Very Similar Symptoms

A clicking or grinding noise on startup usually points here rather than the battery. Pick your make and model below for the specifics.

Symptoms and What They Usually Mean

A clicking noise when turning the key is often the solenoid engaging without successfully turning the engine over. A grinding noise on startup can indicate worn starter gears not meshing properly with the flywheel. Intermittent failure to start — working fine sometimes, not others — is a classic sign of a starter motor nearing the end of its life. Smoke or a burning smell after a failed start attempt is a sign of a straining or overheating starter motor, worth stopping and investigating immediately rather than repeatedly trying to restart.

Confirming Fitment Before You Buy

Starter motor specification differs between engine sizes of the same car, and stop-start equipped versions use a reinforced unit not necessarily interchangeable with the standard part. Always confirm the exact specification for your specific engine and trim before ordering, and check compatibility against your registration or VIN before buying.

DIY Difficulty and Aftermarket Advice

This is a moderate-to-difficult DIY job on most cars, since access often requires working from underneath and disconnecting other components to reach the mounting bolts. Some engine layouts make this considerably more involved than others. Expect 1-3 hours for an experienced home mechanic depending on access, or around an hour of labour at a garage with a lift.

Reputable aftermarket starter motors are generally a safe, cost-effective alternative to OEM parts, provided the specification matches your exact engine and trim. Remanufactured units from established brands are also a solid middle-ground option, often carrying a warranty comparable to new parts at a lower price.
