On the Ford C-Max, because discs and pads wear as a pair, neglecting one speeds up wear on the other — which explains why a routine pad change so often turns up discs that are further gone than expected.
"Warped Discs" Is Usually the Wrong Diagnosis
A pulsing brake pedal or vibrating steering wheel is commonly blamed on warped discs, but in the large majority of cases the discs haven't physically bent from heat at all. What's actually happening is Disc Thickness Variation (DTV) — uneven pad material deposits building up across the disc surface, often during the bedding-in period following a fresh fit — producing the exact same sensation as genuine warping. Bedding in new discs and pads gradually rather than braking hard early on measurably reduces the risk of this developing.
Ford C-Max Brake Discs: What They Do
Brake discs provide the surface the brake pads clamp against to slow the car, converting momentum into heat through friction. Larger, sportier trims of the C-Max typically use bigger discs than standard versions to handle the additional heat generated by more aggressive braking.
